About a Client: Betsy's Story
When Betsy's daughters reached out to me, they had one big wish: that their mom's move from the Oaks at Nipomo to the Villages in San Luis Obispo would feel easy and joyful, not stressful. What followed was one of my favorite experiences I've had as a professional organizer.
Getting Started, One Session at a Time
Moving out of a home isn't something you do in a weekend. For 95 year old Betsy, we took it slow and steady. Short sessions together, going through her belongings at a pace that felt right for her.
Betsy had a system for our sessions: she'd put on a Bing Crosby or Judy Garland CD, and just like that, the mood was set. As we sorted through her things and she shared stories; her travels with her husband, raising her kids, a life beautifully lived. Her handmade photo albums alone could fill an afternoon. We laughed a lot. I learned a lot.
As we worked through each area, I helped Betsy decide what was coming with her and what could go to someone else who'd love it. I took the donation boxes off her hands so she never had to think about them again. And because I know the Villages well, I could help her think practically about her possessions. No need to bring the cleaning supplies, for example, since residents get a weekly cleaning service. Little things like that make a big difference in how much (or how little) needs to move.
Moving Day
By the time the movers arrived, everything was packed, labeled, and ready. The crew was genuinely thrilled. A fully prepped move is a beautiful thing. Betsy and her daughter got to sit back and enjoy watching it all come together rather than scrambling to wrap dishes at the last minute.
I was there at both the old apartment and the new apartment to guide the movers on where everything should go. Betsy's furniture was arranged so her walker could move freely through every room. That part matters more than most people realize.
Before I left that first evening, I made sure her essentials were unpacked and within reach; medications, toothbrush, pajamas. She was home.
Settling In
Over the following week, Betsy and I finished unpacking together. This was the fun part. She had a wonderful eye; she'd been a painter for years, and her apartment walls came alive with her portraits and travel souvenirs, each one with a story. Her husband's portrait found its place. Her photo albums lined the living room, right where they belonged: for everyone to admire.
Her daughter got to be present for her mom without being buried in logistics.
What I Want You to Know
If you're a family looking at a parent's upcoming move and feeling overwhelmed, Betsy's story is for you. This process doesn't have to be a source of stress. With the right support, it can actually be a meaningful time. One where memories get honored, decisions get made gently, and your loved one arrives at their new home feeling settled and cared for.
If that sounds like what your family needs, I'd love to chat. The first conversation is always free, and it's always just that, a conversation.
